The ACT Brumbies winger will make his comeback in a Canberra club rugby match for Wests on Saturday, vowing to adjust his tackling style and restart his season as he chases a Super Rugby recall.

Peni was hit with a harsh and lengthy suspension for his high tackle against Canterbury Crusaders star Israel Dagg at the end of April, ruining his hopes of forcing his way into the Wallabies squad.

It was the third time in less than 12 months Peni had been in trouble for a high tackle and the latest incident prompted the NRL convert to work with defensive guru Peter Ryan to overhaul his style.

"I never intended for it [a high tackle] to happen again. It's been a longer time off than I thought, but it has helped give me a chance to work on my contact and getting it a bit lower," Peni said.

"Basically, whoever wasn't playing trained with me and [Ryan] got me to work on a low wrap and getting my body height lower.

"Coming from rugby league, I was always told to hit a bit higher and try to slow them down. But I've got to learn I'm not playing rugby league any more and I've got to get that contact lower.

"In union, it's more one on one contact out wide and you've got to go lower. I've got to realise it's not league and to get my technique right."

Peni and wing partner Henry Speight will headline a long list of Brumbies returning to the John I Dent Cup competition this weekend to press their claims for Super Rugby selection.

Cult-hero Speight has requested to play for the Gungahlin Eagles despite his heavy workload for the Brumbies so far this year, while hooker Robbie Abel will get valuable game time for Easts.

The Brumbies will restart training on Monday to prepare for the return of Super Rugby after a mid-year break for the international window.

They will be aiming to break a two-year losing streak against New Zealand opponents when they play against the Wellington Hurricanes at Canberra Stadium on June 30.

Peni's return is a boost to the back line, but the former Western Force and Canterbury Bulldogs flyer will be fighting to earn his place in the team after Andy Muirhead stepped up in his absence.

Peni missed four Super Rugby games and an exhibition match against Suntory and concedes he faces a massive challenge to win back his starting spot.

"I can't wait to get out there, even if that's club rugby. I just want to play as hard as I can," Peni said.

"The boys have been playing well since I've been out there. So it's up to the coach to see who he picks in the team, hopefully I can just play as well as I can.

"Any chance you get to play is a chance to put your name forward. The boys are probably ahead of me at this stage, I've just got to do what I do best."
