The Brumbies dazzled in Sydney on Saturday night, beating the NSW Waratahs 40-31 at Allianz Stadium in a barnstorming end to their Super Rugby season.
The pity was that it came too late given they had already been knocked out of finals contention before the game started and they fell short of the bonus point they desperately craved.
But if they were going to go down, they wanted to go down swinging. And that's exactly what they did, saving their best performance for last to stun the Waratahs at home for a season consolation prize.
Ultimately the result didn't matter. A Melbourne Rebels bonus-point loss two hours before kick-off in the Brumbies-Waratahs battle meant the Canberra side couldn't make the finals anyway.
"We were keen to throw the ball around and I thought it was a great contest from both teams. To see our game continue to go forward is a massive positive," said Brumbies captain Christian Lealiifano.
"I think we saved our best to last and that's pleasing. It's something we can build on and take some confidence.
"It's about being proud of the effort [we] put in this year, I'm super proud to be a leader of this group. Looking back, there was probably a time we were going to start slow with new staff and players. But to see the growth in the group was pretty special."
The Brumbies will look back at the Waratahs game and smile, but they'll look back at the season and wonder why they left it so late to make their run to the play-offs.
What if the Brumbies' attack had clicked into gear earlier in the year, in particularly in the games they failed to score tries even when they had more players on the field than their opponents?
What if they played fear-free rugby from round one, throwing passes like the Harlem Globetrotters and scoring tries from anywhere on the field?
What if the Brumbies didn't need to rely on three results going their way in the last round of the season just to be any chance of making the finals?
What if the Rebels hadn't kicked an 80th minute penalty to snatch a bonus point for losing by less than seven points in New Zealand?
What if this team did sneak into the finals riding a wave of momentum and confidence?
They'll stew on those questions until the season begins next year, but they'll also be able to look back at some highlights for the future.
First-year coach Dan McKellar said: "We’ve come a long way in the last couple of months as a footy team.
"The reality was that it was going to take a bit of time. There’s that many occasions within the season that you’d love to have again, but I’m just really proud of how we’ve grown as a group and how we’ve just bought in.
"When times were tough we didn’t move away or question what we were doing, we just stuck at it and we’re starting to see transfer now. That was a good game of football."
The avalanche against the Waratahs started after just two minutes when Tom Banks left defenders in his wake to score the opener.
Banks, Richie Arnold, Isi Naisarani and Andy Murihead scored first-half tries, tearing the Waratahs apart almost at will even when they were the team with 14 men on the field.
Folau Faingaa was sin-binned for a cynical penalty at the base of a ruck, but the Brumbies were in complete control in the first 40 minutes.
In fact, their scoring spree of three tires in the first 20 minutes was their best start to any game since the 2004 grand final win.
Any player of that champion side 14 years ago would have been smiling at the way the Brumbies went from end to end and threw caution to the wind.
Then Kyle Godwin broke free in the second half, tore through the middle of the field, chipped over Israel Folau and scored one of the best tries of the Brumbies' season.
The Waratahs hit back. But the crowning moment was another chip and chase try. This time it was Kuridrani in space and kicking over Folau for Lausii Taliauli to score the match-sealer in the 77th minute.
