Cheika is rumoured to have survived the axe despite a dismal seasons, but Rugby Australia is yet to make an announcement to any changes to the Wallabies' coaching structure.

It has caused angst at Super Rugby franchises, who have been told Cheika wants to take players away for a 10-day camp in January and has nominated which stars he wants to rest from club duties.

That could all change if Cheika is ousted, but it appears likely he will keep his position. His assistants Stephen Larkham and Nathan Grey are believed to still be in the firing line.

The ACT Brumbies are pushing ahead with their pre-season plans despite the Wallabies' uncertainty, launching trial-match details in Goulburn on Friday.

The clash against the NSW Waratahs on February 7 will be the second of two pre-season matches. It will be the only chance for the Brumbies' international contingent to get game time before the start of the season.

It's understood Cheika has nominated David Pocock, Scott Sio, Allan Alaalatoa and Rory Arnold as Brumbies players on managed workloads next year.

The potential of resting Arnold could open the door for recruit Murray Douglas to force his way into the Brumbies' second row after signing a deal to move to Canberra.

Douglas made his Super Rugby debut for the Melbourne Rebels in last year and then played seven games for Wellington Hurricanes this season.

The challenge in Canberra is competing with Arnold, Sam Carter, Blake Enever and young gun Darcy Swain for regular selection.

"But that's a good thing, surrounding yourself with good players you become better yourself," Douglas said.

"I already get the feeling that all of us as locks are using each other's ideas to get better. It's a good environment to be involved in and that sort of competition will hopefully lead to better performances."

The Brumbies have one week left of their pre-Christmas block before welcoming back their Wallabies and ramping up preparations for their February 15 season opener.

They will play trials against the Melbourne Rebels at Viking Park on January 26 and the Waratahs in Goulburn to fine tune their game before a round-one clash against the Rebels at Canberra Stadium.

Scottish-born Douglas has been somewhat of a rugby journeyman. The 29-year-old has spent time at Edinburgh, Melbourne, Wellington and now Canberra.

"It's been good being in different environments in different countries, you get the best parts of coaches, players and different ideas. I've been around a bit, but I like to think I can use that to my advantage," Douglas said.

"I learnt a lot [at the Hurricanes], especially in set piece. Playing and training with All Blacks guys, they hold everyone to high standards. I think that makes you set your own high standards.

"Right now it's about trying to have a really good pre-season, put my hand up in these trial games and hopefully that leads to being picked for round one."

The Brumbies have launched their membership drive for next year and recruits Tom Wright and Vunipola Fifita will be at the Canberra Outlet Centre on Saturday to sign up new fans.
