The Brumbies have all but finalised their squad for the 2019 Super Rugby season, with the last prop position expected to be filled within the next week.

But rich overseas clubs and the end of a World Cup cycle means the Brumbies are already looking to the future for players like David Pocock, Christian Lealiifano and Sam Carter as they enter the final year of their deals.

Tindall says he is excited for the challenge of Australia's "war for talent" after spending almost eight years as the Waikato Chiefs high performance manager and winning back to back Super Rugby titles.

Pocock, Lealiifano and Carter, Tevita Kuridrani and Henry Speight are set to be hot property on the international market, with Japanese and European clubs likely to make contract moves in the coming months.

It's a scenario Tindall has seen plenty of times in his role at the Chiefs and as the New Zealand Rugby contracts manager for a decade and he's keen to help the Brumbies end their title drought.

"Everyone is alive to the fact players do come and they will go as well," Tindall said.

"So therefore it's not just about retention, it's about succession management as well. That comes down to knowing your men really well and knowing what's important to them at different stages.

"In the end you want to care for your men and know sometimes it's best for them to go, but keep that relationship open.

"...There's always a dual focus. The here and now for next season to make the most of season 2019 with the goal of winning it. But also looking ahead, planning player contract and player development.

"There's the war for talent in Australia. But there are also lots of rugby places around the world looking for players, so we've got to work hard to develop and retain, but also look at recruiting."

Tindall has started as the Brumbies' high performance manager and will replace Damien Hill to work alongside Dan McKellar's coaching staff and with incoming chief executive Phil Thomson.

His arrival is a massive coup for the Brumbies given his experience in New Zealand, where he was part of the Chiefs' title-winning set up in 2012-13 and was the key man in the All Blacks contract system before that.

He has worked with some of Super Rugby's most talented players, including Sonny Bill Williams, Brodie Retallick, Damian McKenzie and Sam Cane.

But now he is ready to forge a new path in Canberra, moving across the Tasman to link with the Brumbies despite Australian rugby's woes of recent years.

Australian teams lost 40 Super Rugby games in a row against New Zealand opponents until the NSW Waratahs ended the drought this year. The Brumbies lost 13 in a row against Kiwi teams before beating the Wellington Hurricanes in July.

"I was attracted to staying in Super Rugby and experiencing something new," Tindall said.

"A few things added up and it was a good time for change. I see this as a building exercise and not just for the Brumbies, but for the pathways as well.

"It's great to see the Brumbies have reinvested in the academy and the coaches are willing to give the young guys a go once they've earnt it.

"I know there is competition over here from four or five codes. But I think rugby as a game is well positioned in terms of growing young men and bigger picture, rugby is a world game."

Brumbies coach Dan McKellar has spent the past two weeks on a fact-finding mission in England and Ireland, but will return to Canberra this week. The players will finish their National Rugby Championship campaign before pre-season starts in November.
