On-field rivalries have been put aside as Australian Baseball League clubs band together to support Brisbane Bandits pitcher Loek van Mil as he recovers from serious head injuries suffered in a hiking accident.

Van Mil is expected to be discharged from Canberra Hospital win 10 days after being taken off the critical list. The Dutchman was reportedly unconscious for 24 hours before being discovered by a bushwalker on the outskirts of the capital.

Canberra Cavalry general manager Dan Amodio says the incident has shaken Australia's entire baseball community and the club will leave no stone unturned in helping van Mil and the Bandits through the ordeal.

Bandits players and officials grew frantic about van Mil's whereabouts after the accident occurred on Saturday, when Brisbane were in town for a four-match series against the Cavalry.

Amodio says news began to trickle in on Saturday night at Narrabundah Ballpark, so he raced to the Bandits' team hotel after the match to offer his support when Brisbane players were speaking to police.

"We were all shaken by the news, just like everyone. It’s one of those things that puts everything into perspective," Amodio said.

"Sport is funny that way, because you create a bit of a rivalry on the field, you pump each other up, you pump your teammates up by rallying against the other team.

"At the end of the day, these guys are all friends and these guys are all peers. When something like this happens, it really just shakes you as a whole community.

"This week we’ve been in touch with the guys at the Bandits, some of them were still in Canberra, and offered help wherever we can. We’re hoping everything works out okay."

ABL officials have confirmed van Mil is talking and managed a smile in hospital after his condition slowly improved from gravely injured to critical but stable, before he was taken off the critical list.

Bandits chief executive Mark Ready has been by van Mil's side with doctors confirming a brain bleed has stopped and no surgery will be required, with a family member en route to Canberra from the Netherlands to be with the 34-year-old.

Amodio says Cavalry pitcher Steve Chambers was rocked by the news given he has developed a close relationship with the Netherlands international over the past three seasons at the Adelaide Bite.

Both went their separate ways this season but the pair remained tight since shifting away from the city of churches.

"I definitely hope that’s the case," Amodio said.

"There is a couple of guys on our team that know him quite well, Steve Chambers specifically, one of our pitchers. He’s one of his closest friends, and they actually played together up in Japan. They became quite close.

"Steve has been really shaken by everything since he found out. I’m hoping [van Mil’s improved condition] is the case, and I am hoping he is on the road to recovery."

Van Mil spent the past three ABL seasons with the Adelaide Bite before signing with the Bandits to steel their bid for a fourth consecutive championship.

Another Cavalry pitcher in Frank Gailey joined the outpouring of support for the van Mil family.

"Shout out to Loek van Mil, we’re all hoping him and his family to get through this tough time. Hopefully it's a quick recovery and he’s back on his feet soon," Gailey said.

The 216-centimetre tall pitcher has held minor league contracts with a host of Major League Baseball clubs including the Minnesota Twins, Los Angeles Angels, Cleveland Indians and Cincinnati Reds.
