The Football Federation Australia board met on Wednesday to dissect the six groups bidding for two A-League expansion licences.

It was hoped there would be an announcement at the end of the meeting, but the FFA has scheduled press conference for Thursday where the two successful bids could be unveiled.

The delay put Canberra's bid team on a roller-coaster of emotions after submitting its final proposal, which included speculation Canberra had been overlooked in favour of extra teams in Sydney and Melbourne.

There was also a hoax Twitter account, which said Canberra had been granted a spot in the A-League. Bid leader Michael Caggiano's phone was lighting up all day, but a board meeting of his own was a welcome distraction from the uncertainty.

"It was timely because it kept my attention focused elsewhere, but in every break I was getting calls or looking at text messages," Caggiano said.

"There's been some good feelings, a lot of people saying a job well done and having positive things to say. There was a little bit of nerves, but also a mixture of confidence.

"You don't know how it's going to turn out. We couldn't have done anything more - that was the best a Canberra bid will be and we really believe that.

"Now it's up to the FFA board to make their decision and see where we fit in their strategy for the game. We can't do anything else."

Former Capital Football boss Heather Reid will vote on the proposed expansion of the A-League on Wednesday, declaring she has no conflict of interest despite her Canberra links.

Canberra is considered a genuine contender for one of the spots, but Reid's involvement in the process has been clouded since she was voted on to the FFA board last month.

Reid was the Capital Football chief executive for 11 years and was aligned to a Canberra A-League bid 10 years ago. She stepped down from her chief executive role two years ago.

"Recognising significance of outcomes from today's #FFAboard mtg (sic)," Reid tweeted before the meeting. "And fact that I have no conflict of interest in bids, I will not recuse from decision making process.

"I'm well informed and prepared to take strategically aligned action for expansion."

After a year-long process, football's governing body has gathered in Sydney to make recommendations on expanding the league for the first time since 2012.

It's expected two teams will be chosen as 'preferred bidders' by the governing body, but a host of scenarios are possible for each of the six bidders.

They include joining the A-League next season, a delay until 2020-21 or a new pathway for a license after FFA get to 12 teams.

This expansion phase aims to grow the 10-team competition to 16 sides, which means whatever the outcome from Wednesday's meeting, there will be further avenues to inclusion.

And not just for the unsuccessful among the six bidders: frontrunners Team 11 in Melbourne's South-East and South-West Sydney, as well as Canberra, South Melbourne, Western Melbourne and Sydney's Southern Expansion.

FFA will re-open the door for other consortia - particularly from Brisbane - seeking to gain entry, given their eagerness to create a derby in the Queensland capital.

The Canberra bid also thanked its 8000 'foundation members' that signed up online and over 100 volunteers.

"The one thing that has struck the bid team throughout this process is the amazing level of support from football supporters across the ACT and Southern NSW region," it read.
