Corica was unveiled as the Sky Blues' new head coach on Wednesday having signed on for two years - a week after Wilkinson extended his stay for the same duration - although marquee internationals Bobo and Milos Ninkovic plus club captain Alex Brosque are yet to commit their futures.

It is believed all three players had been waiting for clarity on the head coaching appointment before committing for next season.

Sydney FC players are on leave as of Friday before Corica takes charge for his first preseason, by which stage Wilkinson was hopeful Bobo, Ninkovic and Brosque will have all been secured for the 2018-19 A-League season.

"Now knowing who the head coach is going to be, it makes their decision clearer and gives them an idea of how the club is going to look for the next couple of years," Wilkinson said.

"If that's what they were thinking then I guess that can now make their decisions easier. Bobo's had a fantastic season, a record amount of goals which has been fantastic, Ninko, he's had a wonderful couple of seasons as well, and then Brosquey, obviously the captain of the club, we hope he stays around because of his leadership and his ability on the field and off the field.

"I hope that those three can get locked away as soon as possible."

Ex-Mariner Wilkinson has known Corica for more than a decade having played against the former Socceroo before he retired in 2010.

Since joining Sydney FC in 2016 when Corica was still Arnold's assistant, Wilkinson has become much closer to the new coach.

"He's the perfect fit for Sydney FC, he's played for the club, he's captained the club, he's won a championship captaining the club as well and then obviously done his work with the youth team and as assistant coach," Wilkinson said.

"It's the logical thing that he steps up and becomes head coach next. He's got that invaluable experience of knowing the boys inside out, knowing the culture that the club wants to create and that it currently has and that's definitely going to help.

"He was a great player, a No.10 with great feet. He had a good pass to be able to set up goals and also scored quite a few goals himself.

"He still joins in training with us boys, every day pretty much and still can hold his own for sure. He loves jumping in the four v fours and in the five v two and whatnot and trying to show us boys up."

Sydney FC chief Danny Townsend told the players on Wednesday morning that Corica had fended off a raft of overseas candidates to secure the job.

"All the boys are over the moon to be honest, when Danny came to training yesterday morning and let us all know, all the boys were rapt," Wilkinson said.

"Not only it's someone that's familiar to us but also we're happy for Steve himself, we all realise and know that he deserves the chance and we were just happy for him personally."
