Hosking and tennis gun Nick Kyrgios won the top individual awards at function at the National Arboretum on Friday night, honoured for their respective seasons on the international circuit.

Hosking won the road cycling gold medal at the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast, the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road race, stage four of the women's Tour Down Under and was first in points classification for the women's Herald Sun Tour.

It was a brilliant year for 28-year-old and she was bursting with emotion when she crossed the line on the Gold Coast, saying: "People say for road cycling that the Commonwealth Games aren't that big a deal, but I am a Commonwealth Games champion and it is a big f---ing deal."

Hosking also has a bronze medal from the Commonwealth Games eight years ago and is targeting a strong result at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.

She can also add the capital's best female athlete title to her long list of achievements, even if there was no emotional outburst in her acceptance speech.

"I just wanted to say thank you very much for this nomination and the award," Hosking said from Europe.

"It's a huge honour to be recognised as the Canberra female athlete of the year. Canberra is such a rich place for sport and there are so many top athletes coming out of our small capital.

"I feel really honoured to be recognised. Obviously it's not just me that goes into winning a gold medal, or performing at the highest level of your sport.

"There's the team behind the team, my parents who are there representing me, my coach Eric Haakonssen, Cycling Australia ... and I feel indebted to Canberra as a town. Canberra is the reason why I could cycle when I was younger."

Hosking edged out winter Olympian Laura Peel and cross-triathlete Penny Slater for the top prize, while Emily Tapp beat Nikki Ayers and Cameron Crombie for the para athlete of the year award.

The Canberra Brave was named the team of the year for winning the Goodall Cup in the Australian Ice Hockey League and Robyne Houston won the outstanding service to sport category.

Jeff Williams (baseball) and Garry Lawless (touch) were inducted into the ACT Sport Hall of Fame and Noel Bissett (rugby league) and Dick Telford (athletics) were made associate members.

Small was the standout in the hot field of the newly created rising star category after making her Commonwealth Games debut as a teenager in the 800 metres event.

But the strength of the junior category suggests there's a new generation of athletes ready to shine, with golfer Adam Thorp, Brumbies player Ryan Lonergan, Canberra United's Karly Roestbakken and tennis prodigy Annerly Poulos all named as finalists.

Kyrgios beat indoor cricket star Matthew Floros and rower Caleb Antill in the men's category after he won the Brisbane International and started the year ranked No. 14 in the world.

The 23-year-old was also recognised for his work off the court as much as what he did on it, with his community work and the NK Foundation also forming part of his successful nomination.

Award selection panel chairman Robert de Castella said: "Nick's an incredible athlete and we all love to see him competing and representing us on the court.

"We're incredibly proud of what he does with the racquet and also incredibly proud of the contribution he's making to the community, the work he does with the up and coming tennis kids out at Lyneham and through his new foundation that he's setting up to use his profile to help kids that are struggling.

"We're really excited to be able to acknowledge and recognise him and really look forward to seeing a continuing contribution to the young kids and the community."
