This February, drag queens Aquaria, Asia O’Hara, Detox, Eureka O’Hara, Kameron Michaels, Kim Chi, Monét X Change, Naomi Smalls, Sharon Needles and Violet Chachki, plus show judge Michelle Visage, will sashay into Canberra for their stage show Werq the World.
If you're not a lover of Rupaul's Drag Race, these names will probably mean nothing to you.
But they've all been competitors on the American reality TV show, which has a cult-following in Australia. Drag queen, actor and TV personality RuPaul is a triple threat in Rupaul's Drag Race, as host, mentor, and head judge in the VH1 series. Through fierce challenges involving rap battles, catwalks, Cher lip-syncs and more, queens compete to be crowned "America's next drag superstar".
So it makes sense that Voss Events, a production company that has worked on events with Cher and Lady Gaga, is at the helm.
The show's producer, Brandon Voss, says,“The music, sets, fashion, choreography and lighting are all a cosmic feast for the senses. Audiences will be in awe as their favourite queens come together on some incredible numbers."
"The show has always been a theatrical production of the highest calibre but in 2019, we’re stepping it up into the stratosphere. This show is going to leave fans gagging and I’m not afraid to say that my performance, in particular, will give you life.”
The concept of the new stage show is set to have mass appeal. Worldwide appeal. No, intergalactic appeal.
The mission of the queens, from Aquaria to Violet Chachki, will be to save the galaxy from a "dark entity". To do this, they will venture through the universe to the sun.
And you can bet your your silkiest set of false lashes that the stars of Rupaul's Drag Race will look fabulous while doing it.
Asia O'Hara, who has previously performed in Australia, said the production was a bit of a dream.
"It is probably the biggest drag show production I have ever been a part of. It gives me my full fantasy.
"We have set prices, props, costume changes, and more. The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show is the biggest fashion show in the world, but this is the biggest drag show in the world."
After werqing through Asia and Australia, the tour will head to Europe and then North and Latin America.
