One vet said there was as many as 20 cases in one week.

Murrumbateman resident Briony Windsor read a post on social about media about recognising snake bites in dogs, and spotted the symptoms in her one-year-old pomeranian Trixie last Sunday.

"Earlier on the Sunday she had a funny walk and had a shaking episode that lasted for about 30 seconds," Ms Windsor said.

"Later in the afternoon she was shaking and shivering again and that lasted for well over a minute."

After racing Trixie to a nearby vet, blood tests confirmed she was bitten by a snake. She was immediately given anti-venom and after staying at the vet overnight, Trixie made a full recovery.

But the incident has made Ms Windsor more snake aware.

"We've re-evaluated. We used to have wood piles and long grass and now they've been removed," she said.

The Canberra Veterinary Emergency Service has treated a dozen dogs and cats in the past fortnight for snake bites.

The service's director Taleta Hompas said a majority of the bites have come from brown and tiger snakes.

"The peak snake bite season is around December, but often there's a surge in October when the snakes come out of hibernation and mobilise," Ms Hompas said.

"Usually when the temperature starts climbing over 20 degrees consistently is when we start to see snakes."

Ms Hompas said snake bites carry more venom straight after they emerge from hibernation, meaning vet presentations are more urgent earlier in the season.

"There's subtle differences later on, because when the snakes start to feed, we see dogs and cats with lower venom levels."

Ms Hompas said there were several signs to look out for if pet owners suspect their dog or cat has been bitten.

"The common symptoms are vomiting, diarrhoea and collapsing," she said.

"Sometimes there are cases when pets collapse and then start moving a few minutes later and it looks like they're ok, but that's a sign they've been seriously bitten."

In a Facebook post from the vet clinic, they said prognosis for recovery from snakebite can be good - 91 per cent of cats who receive antivenom and 75 per cent of dogs will survive - but this depends on how much venom is injected and also how quickly treatment is received.

Animal Referral Hospital's clinical director for emergency Michelle Keatley said while the number of snake bites hasn't increased compared to previous years, presentations have been on the rise since the start of spring.

"We didn't see our first one until September this year, and there hasn't been that dramatic an increase until the last few weeks," she said.

"There's always a spike in cases when the season starts."

Pet owners that suspect their dog or cat has been bitten should take them to the nearest vet immediately.
