ACT Parks and Conservation Service said it was investigating a report a group of men killed the birds on the 7th hole of the Gold Creek Country Club about 5.35 pm on Saturday.

Pro shop manager at the club Peter Wallensky said he believed a group of about four young men had deliberately driven over the duck and ducklings with a golf cart and then thrown them into the pond.

"When our operations manager went out to speak to them their reaction was as if they didn't care and they could do what they pleased," Mr Wallensky said.

"They drove the buggies on the greens, one even ended up in the bunker.

"It's disgraceful and they shouldn't be able to get away with it."

ACT Parks and Conservation Ranger Joel Patterson said one duck and two ducklings had been killed. The incident had been reported through social media.

"We’re currently working with the Gold Creek Country Club and the people that reported the incident to try and gather a bit more information," Mr Patterson said.

"We're also looking at the CCTV at the club ... Obviously, the golf club is appalled by the situation so they’re being very helpful."

Mr Patterson said penalties for someone found guilty of the incident was a fine of up to $32,000 or two years in prison. He said if the incident was deemed bad enough, both could be given.

The incident has provoked a strong reaction on social media, with people describing it as absolutely disgusting, vile and despicable.

"What in the world is wrong with people!! What ... did a duckling ever do," wrote one.

ACT Parks and Conservation said all native animals were protected and there were strong penalties for killing or endangering them.
