Fishburners opened in Brisbane’s first CBD start-up space The Capital in 2016 and the hub is where some of the city’s leading entrepreneurs develop their ideas.

Fishburners Queensland general manager Isaac Holmyard said there was currently 160 members using the space daily and 104 tech founders and tech startups in the space.

“We’re growing. We are punching above our weight, we aren’t just ticking the boxes, we are exceeding the challenges that were given to us to support start-up community here in Queensland,” he said.

Mr Holmyard said there were about 35 people who had been on a wait list and would now get space but expected the hub, even with the new 95 spots, would be back at 100 per cent capacity by the end of 2018.

“We are very sure of what it’s going to look like in 12 months,” he said.

“What it’s going to look like in 24 to 36 months, that’s something that we’re going to continually innovate along the way.”

The expansion included two new accelerator programs, including a launch pad to help start-ups scale into Asia.

Brisbane based headphones creator Audeara will use the launch pad to take its product, headphones tailored to individual hearing, into Shenzhen, China.

Similarly, Shenzhen-based robotics company Dorabot will use the launch pad to establish itself in Brisbane.

In 2016, Brisbane City Council made a $5 million commitment over five years to establish The Capital and expand Brisbane’s start-up community.

Deputy mayor Adrian Schrinner said the council would “no doubt” continue its investment.

“Whether it takes the same form is anyone’s guess, but certainly we will continue to support this facility, it’s doing a great job,” he said.
