Capital Football took six points from Gungahlin's Canberra premier league team, stating the move is to "protect the integrity" of the competition after the club failed to meet payment arrangements for an historic aged debt.

It means Gungahlin will begin their premier league campaign on the backfoot heading into their round one bye.

Capital Football chief executive Phil Brown says the governing body has been working with the Gungahlin club committee to formulate a plan to address the debt, which built up through a range of areas.

"All of our competitions have a registration fee for players and also ground hire and referee fees," Brown said.

"For different competitions, depending on whether we book the field or not, we collect for the senior premier league competitions. We pay the referees and then invoice the clubs for it. It’s a combination of things across those different aspects of the game.

"The committee were very open with us and very proactive in reviewing their approach for the season ahead. We think the plan moving forward will leave the club in a very strong position for the season ahead and for years to come.

"We worked with them to identify areas where they might be able to save some money, but to be fair, the vast majority of that work they had already done themselves in reviewing their own operations."

Gungahlin president Neil Harlock says the outcome, which was agreed to by the club and Capital Football, will allow both parties to move forward.

The club has outlined its desire to re-establish itself as a breeding ground for future stars by providing opportunities for players through grassroots and premier league levels.

"The new GUFC Executive has worked closely with the Capital Football board over the last six months to ensure that the financial stability as well as the future of the Gungahlin Football community is and remains the most important aspect of our club," Harlock said.
