Tree roots are creeping into Brisbane’s sewers and creating huge blockages and expensive bills for residents.

Queensland Urban Utilities has released footage showing the extent of these blockages, with some so significant they block the entire passage.
More than 3500 blockages in sewer pipes are cleared by QUU each year and tree roots are the primary cause.
QUU spokeswoman Michelle Cull said people might not know tree roots had caused a blockage until it was too late.
“Tree roots are always on the hunt for water and nutrients, so sewers are a prime target,” she said.
“Some roots are as thin as a stand of hair, so they can creep through even the tiniest joint between two sewer pipes then swell to form a mass of roots and cause a serious blockage.”
Tree roots can also find their way into household pipes.
Ms Cull said repairs to household plumbing damaged by tree roots could run into thousands of dollars.
“Any tree can cause issues but some species are more problematic than others,” she said.
“The worst offenders are the ones that love to seek out water, such as figs, bottlebrushes and paperbarks.
“We recommend planting species with less invasive root systems such as tulipwood, native gardenia and lemon myrtle.”
QUU wanted to urge residents to think ahead about potential blockages to household pipes before doing any spring planting.
Tips:
- Do not plant trees too close to sewer pipes – as a general rule, at least three metres from the pipe. If you’re not sure where your pipes are, you can request a drainage plan from your local council. You can also call Dial Before You Dig on 1100.
- Install a root barrier to contain the plant’s root system.
- Avoid planting near freshly laid pipes as tree roots are attracted to the softer soil.
