The $3,975,000 figure was revealed in an answer to a Parliamentary question on notice to Deputy Premier and Treasurer Jackie Trad from the Opposition Shadow Treasurer Tim Mander.

Earlier this year, an audit office report revealed a staggering $1.2 billion was owed in unpaid fines. About $191 million of the debt was potentially unenforceable because the person had died, was unable to be identified or the debt was registered more than a decade ago.

In her answer, Ms Trad said the amount of debt collected by the SPER (State Penalties Enforcement Registry) in the last year was $282.1 million.

SPER had also improved the “finalisation of debts”, Ms Trad said, lifting the rate to 99 per cent from its historic level of 65 per cent.

The answer also revealed there were other circumstances that allowed for the writing off of debts by SPER but that the guideline for such a decision “must not be made available to the public.”
