Large amounts of rubbish, including square-metre sized polystyrene blocks, have been blown into Moncrieff and the nearby wetlands by the recent heavy winds.

Residents claim there has been no response from the government despite attempts to contact Access Canberra, city services minister Meegan Fitzharris or chief minister, Andrew Barr.

On Saturday afternoon, Moncrieff resident Cate Ruth walked down to the nearby pond where polystyrene blocks were floating in the waters.

"This is disgusting," Ms Ruth said.

"Even when we get this cleaned up it's not going to go away."

The polystyrene blocks have started to break up in the wetlands and are also scattered in Moncrieff residents' gardens.

Large piles are visible on the street after locals tried to collect what they could, but the blocks are too big to be disposed of in domestic bins.

"It's builder's waste. It's not just when there's a big wind storm it's everyday we're outside picking it up. Most of it now is down in the pond ... it's creating [environmental] issues there as well," Ms Ruth said.

She said the waste had been a problem for two years but the polystyrene blocks were the last straw for residents.

Ms Ruth wants a long term strategy to dispose of the waste properly and to clean up the wetlands.

Moncrieff resident Lana Hannan has rheumatoid arthritis so it's too painful for her to clean up the rubbish constantly blowing into her yard, leaving her 16-year-old son and her partner to clean it up.

"He [Ms Hannan's partner] filled his boot full of polystyrene," Ms Hannan said.

"We've spent the last ten days picking up rubbish out of the garden. I pride myself on a beautiful garden."

Ms Hannan said Moncrieff residents were "pissed off" at having to clean up the waste.

She wants the government to fine the builders who aren't covering their skips properly.

"Do something to protect us residents and the environment," Ms Hannan said.

Liberal member for Yerrabi James Milligan said the government wasn't doing enough.

"Moncrieff doesn’t have a bus service, it doesn’t have a reliable bin collection service, and it isn’t getting
the basic maintenance required to keep the suburb clean," he said.
