The bike paths will connect the Belconnen town centre, the University of Canberra, Radford College and Canberra Institute of Technology Bruce campus.
Construction will begin on the project in mid-2019 and is expected to take a year to complete.
City services minister Chris Steel said the new route would be the first dedicated cycle path outside of the city cycleways.
"On part of the bikeways, we're literally turning the former Belconnen busway into cycle freeway, to better connect Belconnen, with a separate path for pedestrians," Mr Steel said.
"This is a huge step forward for active travel in Canberra."
The route will begin at Coulter Drive in Florey and continue on old bus lanes on Joynton Smith Drive to the Belconnen town centre.
The bike paths will then run along Emu Bank and Aikman Drive, before going on to College Street, and Haydon Drive, running past the University of Canberra campus.
The final route proposed for Belconnen came after talks last year between the government and cycling-advocacy group Pedal Power, the Belconnen Community Council and the Heart Foundation.
It was then put to community consultation.
ACT Labor backbencher Tara Cheyne said the bike paths would allow for cyclists to reach other areas of Canberra by bike more easily.
"This improved accessibility will make a real difference for commuters in Belconnen, as well as people who just like to get active on the weekend."
Tenders for the bike paths were opened on May 10 and will close off on May 7.
The dedicated cycleway is just one of several bike-related measures set to come to the Belconnen area in coming months.
Designs are being finalised for a protected cycle path on Benjamin Way between College Street and Emu Bank.
The design will be announced later this year, with tenders being evaluated for the project.
Preliminary work is also under way on a shared pathway along Lake Ginninderra connecting the Arts Centre and parkland at Emu Inlet, with final expected to be announced later this year.
