But on the bright side the succession of cold fronts is tipped to bring more than 100cms of fresh snow to resorts delivering an unusual extension to the season for ski bunnies.

Weatherzone meteorologist Jacob Cronje said Canberrans needed to brace themselves for a long week of chilly weather.

"There will be light showers and possible snowfalls to the south of Canberra," he said.

"We will see cloud cover keep minimum temperatures near zero, so not the very cold mornings we have had in recent weeks, but daytime temperatures are very unlikely to breech the 12 to 13 degree mark because it is so cold, windy and cloudy."

Mr Cronje said it was not uncommon to have cold flurries at the beginning of September but these significant fresh snowfalls this late in the season was a bit more uncommon.

Perisher has had more than two metres of snowfall during August and with plenty more snow on the way has announced it will extend the Spring ski season until Sunday October 8.

A series of cold fronts and a low pressure system over the south east of Australia was causing very cold air to be pushed over the lower east coast, Mr Cronje said.

"In the wake of the cold fronts, this very cold air is also leading to showers, the odd thunderstorm and snowfall over the alps and tablelands."

The Australian Bureau of Meteorology issued a weather warning to ACT and region sheep graziers about cold temperatures, showers and strong westerly winds which are to reach 35 to 45 km/hr on Monday and Tuesday.

Beyond uncomfortable weather Mr Cronje said those heading to the coast or mountains should be conscious of the unpredictable conditions.

"In terms of any holiday plans over the next few days it's probably not great," he said.

"There will be very windy conditions on the eastern seaboard over the coming days. Although it is mainly off shore winds it won't be great conditions."

"Decent snowfalls are expected for the alps but it is quite likely there will be icy roads and impassable thoroughfares. Getting to the snow could be tricky and dangerous. People should be mindful of keeping distance on the roads, which may be icy, and of course any snowfalls bring reduced visibility."

Keep your fleeces, mittens and beanies handy until the week is out but don't fret warmer weather isn't far away.

"Fom about Monday there should be a general warming trend in daytime and minimum temperatures," he said.

"Maximum temperatures are expected in the mid to high teens, probably not going to break the 20 degree mark but it will push right up to almost 20 degrees."
