However lobbyist Kel Watt said the current high animal welfare standards could be comprised if the money was taken away.

The ACT minister for regulatory services, Gordon Ramsay, has reiterated his decision that there was "no future" for the industry in Canberra.

After July 1, more than $1 million in funding would be cut from the club and redirected to the transition program to assist workers to re-skill, as well as re-home and care for the greyhounds, a spokeswoman for the minister said.

A report into the transition options for workers and dogs was handed to the government this week.

The ACT initially announced it would pull funding after the NSW government's decision last year to ban the sport. But then-premier of NSW Mike Baird backflipped on the ban. A program of reform, including an integrity body, was set to be implemented instead.

Animal welfare issues, including live baiting, contributed to the government's decision. However Mr Watt pointed out the Canberra club had a clean record for animal welfare issues.

Mr Watt, who has not yet seen the report, said no matter the government's decision, "every single dog in the ACT would continue to be raced and trained".

He said they would fight for the money to ensure animal welfare standards, which he described as "exceeding the minimum standards" would remain a priority.

Mr Watt said the smarter option would be to implement a reform process similar to NSW to ensure animals were being treated to a high standard.

He said Canberra dogs raced in surrounding areas of NSW most days of the week, returning to compete in the ACT on Sundays.

"Those dogs will continue to operate. By stopping that industry in the ACT, animal welfare does not improve, all it does is simply have 44 or more Canberrans lose their livelihoods," Mr Watt said.

Those 44 are the target of the ACT government's transition program, which is hoping to lure people out of the sport with incentives to re-skill themselves and re-home their dogs.

But Mr Watt said that was unlikely, and the industry was still viable without the government's funding.

He said the areas likely to be affected were the club's rehoming policy, which would continue but without the current indefinite time period put on finding the animals a home, and their ability to subsidise vet bills for injured dogs to prevent euthanasia.

"I would hate for that to become compromised," Mr Watt said.

"But if we have to pull the budget in we couldn't be criticised for putting in place the [minimum standards]."

The report into transition options for the industry was delivered earlier this week to the minister by independent consultant Mary Durkin. The government is yet to decide if it will be released publicly.

"The government will now consider its position on the report and the options for a transition process in the coming weeks, prior to June 30," a spokeswoman for Mr Ramsay said.

"It remains the government position that the continued operation of greyhound racing in the ACT is out of step with community values."
