But Justice, Consumer Affairs and Road Safety Minister Shane Rattenbury said no attempts had been made to register a new vehicle bearing offensive slogans in the territory.

Queensland's parliament passed a law on Wednesday permitting the deregistration of vehicles with "inappropriate" words or pictures if the messages were not removed within 14 days of a warning.

The laws were targeted at the Wicked Campers rental company, which had attracted notoriety and criticism in recent years for sexist slogans on its fleet of vans.

Tasmania and Victoria have also signalled their intentions to adopt similar laws.

Mr Rattenbury said none of the company's vans were registered in the ACT.

He said existing laws allowed the Road Transport Authority to refuse registration to vehicles if the reason for the suspension of registration in another state or territory still existed.

Under that law, a vehicle deregistered in Queensland for bearing offensive slogans could be refused registration in the ACT if the inappropriate messages were not removed.

"It is unlikely that these [Wicked Camper] vans would meet the garage address requirements to allow them to be registered here," Mr Rattenbury said.

"These vans and the offensive slogans they bear have no place on ACT roads."

Queensland Transport and Main Roads will automatically notify the ACT government if a vehicle is deregistered in that state for bearing offensive slogans or advertising.

"This arrangement will support efforts by jurisdictions where these vans operate to stop the use of offensive advertising," Mr Rattenbury said.

"The ACT government is seeking to work with other jurisdictions, in addition to Queensland, on similar arrangements."

The government would "consider legislative amendments if required" to introduce similar bans to the ACT, but no plans were in place to replicate Queensland's model.
