In an informal chat with Julian Abbott on-air on Tuesday, Sloan said Friday 9 December will be her final day at 666, before she heads into retirement.

"The time has come," she told listeners.

As Abbott played Sinatra's I Did It My Way as a tribute in the background, Sloan said she'll swap the microphone for gardening gloves and could potentially undertake a "handy person's course at TAFE" in retirement.

"I think you just know sometimes - it's time for a bit of refreshment and renewal here," she said.

Sloan joined the ABC as a rural reporter in Tasmania in 1989 and has spent the past 22 years as a radio announcer at 666 Canberra.

She's been 'the voice' of many programs for Canberra listeners over the years including five years on the Drive program, four years on Weekends, eight years on Mornings and four as the host of the Afternoon show. In recent times, Alex's Canberra Close Up segment and podcast has become one of 666's most popular weekly features.

"I love Canberra - it's made me," she said.

"I've had the time of my life. Thank you to the ABC and of course thank you to all of my listeners."

Sloan's final gig as a local media personality will occur on 25 January 2017 when she hosts the national Australian of the Year Awards at Parliament House.
