About 2594 Canberrans cast their votes at pre-polling centres in Civic and each of the town centres on Tuesday, an increase of 1449 on the first day of 2012.

It comes as both Labor and the Greens promised major spends on cycle infrastructure. Labor promised green bins for every home and to build a $4.7 million Belconnen bikeway, while the Greens pledged studies into setting up a bike share scheme and building cycle hubs across Canberra.

The bike infrastructure announcements were made at an election forum hosted by cycle advocates Pedal Power in Civic on Tuesday night.

Labor's dedicated bike-only path would connect the Belconnen town centre to the University of Canberra and Canberra Institute of Technology in Bruce.

The bikeway, Labor says, would be three to four metres wide, and would connect Page and Florey to the commercial town centre.

It would also invest in more bike racks and in Braddon and wants to work with cycling bodies to attract "cycling tourism" to Canberra.

The Greens, meanwhile, announced they would consider building bicycle hubs in Civic and other town centres, which would include "end-of-trip facilities" like showers and bike storage to reduce barriers to commuting.

A feasibility study would also look at a bike share scheme, where Canberrans could pick up and return bikes from stations located across the city.

Greens leader Shane Rattenbury said the bike share scheme would complement the party's plans for light rail and buses.

It comes on the back of their massive $60 million commitment to build new walking and cycling infrastructure throughout the city.

"Canberrans want more travel options. Half of the car trips in Canberra are less than five kilometres, which is easy and quick to manage on a bike," he said.

The Canberra Liberals have already announced cycle lanes along Northbourne Avenue in their Gungahlin to City infrastructure plan.

They also plan to allow bikes to be brought onto Rapid buses, instead of front-mounting them.
