Shane Van Duren, 41, was arrested after he allegedly cut through three fences at the RSPCA's Weston Creek premises in an attempt to free his Belgian shepherd last December.

The animal had been picked up after it was found wandering the streets by a member of the public.

Van Duren posted on social media after the alleged break-in that he had "sprung" the dog, which was a companion dog to assist in treating his post-traumatic stress disorder, a court previously heard.

Police and an RSPCA inspector went to his Deakin home the next day, but Van Duren allegedly refused to surrender the animal.

He grew violent and allegedly punched a police officer and choked the RSPCA inspector when she tried to intervene.

Van Duren is said to have yelled at the inspector: "I'll kill you, you bitch. You're f---ing dead bitch."

Officers called for back-up and subdued Van Duren with capsicum spray and batons.

He has pleaded not guilty in the ACT Magistrates Court to choking, making threats to kill, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, resisting arrest and property damage and trespass.

Van Duren was back in court on Thursday where he was committed to stand trial on the charges in the ACT Supreme Court.

He also sought to have conditions of a protection order, barring him from the RSPCA and from approaching staff, relaxed so lawyers could contact the agency to have his dog returned.

But RSPCA ACT chief executive Tammy Ven Dange wanted the order extended to cover all RSPCA facilities across Australia and said Van Duren had contacted an interstate facility looking for the dog.

Magistrate Margaret Hunter agreed to extend the protection order for another 12 months, covering all RSPCA facilities while also allowing Van Duren to contact the staff through a lawyer.

The case will be mentioned in the higher court next month.
