Work is under way to co-locate the National Capital Exhibition and the new Canberra Region Visitors Centre, with the current facility on Northbourne Avenue expected to close by the end of June as the government continues redevelopment of the corridor and the Gungahlin tram line.

A new intersection will be added to Commonwealth Avenue at Regatta Point to allow improved access from both directions. The site was chosen for the visitor centre to capitalise on views across Lake Burley Griffin and for proximity to major attractions including Parliament House, the national institutions and Commonwealth Park.

The design will see a renewed entrance and walkway to the building, a new foyer and administration offices.

Parking will be altered at the site to accommodate trailers, buses and caravans and visitors are expected to have free parking for a specified period.

National Capital Authority boss Malcolm Snow said the design would be sensitive to the heritage significance of the original rotunda and architectural character of Regatta Point.

"We think this is a great combination because in one place visitors to Canberra will be able to get an introduction to the national capital and understand the people, history and events that have shaped our capital.

"[Visitors] will then be able to turn around and get a whole lot of information about the visitors' attractions of Canberra," Mr Snow said.

A visitors centre "closer to the action" would improve the tourist experience, Mr Snow said. Improved signage and online information will direct tourists to the new centre.

"This is without doubt the most stunning location in Canberra. When you think of what happens around this site, Floriade and other events, the opportunity of City to the Lake ... we think this is a fabulous co-location."

Visit Canberra director Ian Hill said visitors would be encouraged to share their images and videos of Canberra on social media, with content displayed on large screens and other technology in the new centre.

"At the moment we attract around two million overnight domestic visitors a year and 196,000 international visitors.

"We've had record visitation in recent times and we're very excited to be partnering with the NCA here to create a destination in its own right," he said.

Technology, flyers and maps would be included in the centre's offerings and Mr Hill said creative use of film and photography would alert visitors to all kinds of attractions.

"We've been inspired a bit by things like the Apple store and places where you see technology being used and people interacting. Our staff will be out front, they won't be behind counters ... and we will tailor advice to suit that need."

Mr Hill said a "seamless transition" was being planned for after construction work was completed.
