In March 2015, there were a total of 6729 speeding fines issued by mobile speeding vans, compared with 11,434 fines in March 2016.

The jump was due to increased hours vans spend on Canberra roads and a change in legislation allowing vans to access more locations.

So if you thought you had seen more mobile speed vans, you were probably right.

Access Canberra has added an extra van to its mobile speeding fleet, bringing the total number to five, with the vans patrolling an extra 160 hours per week.

Craig Simmons, director of regulatory compliance at government body Access Canberra, said previously only 30 locations in Canberra could be monitored by mobile speeding vans, but that legislation had been dropped.

"As long as it's safe to do so ... we can set up anywhere in the city now," Mr Simmons said.

Mr Simmons said speed cameras were specifically targeting child care centres, schools and suburban streets drivers used as rat runs to avoid traffic.

"You find them travelling at fairly ridiculous speeds on suburban streets and that's where you get a fair few people writing in and asking for us to do something," Mr Simmons said.

"Now we are able to respond when people write to us and say, 'Hey my street's become really busy … there's all these cars travelling down my street really fast can you do something about that?'," Mr Simmons said.

According to Mr Simmons, this was part of a long-term strategy to reduce speeding in the ACT.

"The statistics show you get significant improvement in road safety as speed reduces," he said.

"It sends people a message, it lets people know we're there.

"The thing about speeding fines is that the driver has 100 per cent capacity to avoid them."

Speeding fines from other methods such as fixed cameras and Australian Federal Police patrols remained stable during the same period.
