A time to be silent and a time to speak: will Martin Parkinson ditch his commentary?

The appointment of Martin Parkinson as secretary of the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet last December attracted widespread plaudits. In making the announcement, Prime Minster Malcolm Turnbull emphasised Parkinson's extensive experience as an economist and secretary of the Treasury. By implication, this would equip him to drive the Turnbull government's economic agenda. Commentators noted Parkinson's long-standing advocacy of improved productivity and innovation, which clearly chimed with Turnbull's own thinking.
