The crowds of flat-pack furniture lovers are set to cause some traffic chaos in and around the Majura Park area.

IKEA has urged first-look customers to consider car-pooling or catching public transport to ease pressure on parking near the store.

The ACT government has echoed the call and introduced a number of measures to tackle traffic congestion.

A Territory and Municipal Services spokeswoman said "major delays" were expected in the Majura Park precinct and on surrounding roads including Pialligo Avenue, Fairbairn Avenue, Morshead Drive and the Monaro Highway.

"The delays will be experienced throughout the week, particularly during the weekday morning and afternoon peak periods. Significant delays are also expected across the weekend," she said.

"IKEA customers are encouraged to use public transport where possible."

Customers catching a bus will have access to a special loop service this week, departing from the city bus interchange at platform nine and travelling directly to the Majura Road store.

The temporary bus route will operate from 10am to 5.40pm from Monday, November 16, to Sunday, November 22.

The spokeswoman said other Majura Park buses would continue to run as normal however traffic congestion was expected to spark delays.

Those brave enough to get behind the wheel are advised to enter IKEA from the north via the Majura Parkway, Tambreet Street and Majura Road and take the northbound route when exiting.

A free carpark shuttle loop will run throughout the weekend for those parking further away from the store.

The shuttle bus will ferry drivers from numerous car parks to the store's front door between 10.30am and 9pm on Saturday and 11am and 8pm Sunday.

"Motorists are encouraged to take extra care when travelling on roads in this area throughout the opening week and people are advised to allow additional travel time to get to their destination," the spokeswoman said.

Meanwhile, the northbound Molonglo River bridge and Fairbairn Avenue twin bridges opened on Wednesday, just in time for the IKEA opening.

Morshead Drive has been closed between Fairbairn Avenue and Pialligo Avenue to allow for the construction of the southbound Majura Parkway.

Traffic will travel in both directions along the northbound Molonglo River bridge structure while the southbound structure is completed.

The southbound bridge and entire $288 million parkway are due for completion in mid-2016.
