He also dispelled rumours swirling around his departure from his long-running slot on the Scotty and Nige breakfast program and took a swipe at Canberra FM general manager Eoghan O'Byrne, who announced Masters was gone in a media statement on October 9.

"I'll say now what I wasn't given the opportunity to say by Mr O'Byrne and that is, 'Goodbye'," he said.

"It was an honour and a privilege to be able to co-host that show with Nige, have a little fun each day and help out the Canberra community and surrounds the way we did, that was always a team effort and in no way can I take credit for all that work."

A radio veteran of 24 years, Masters confirmed he is pursuing legal action against the station but declined to go into details, other than to infer his departure was anything but a redundancy, as characterised by station management.

He wants to stay in Canberra, ideally in radio, but concedes that is unlikely given FM 104.7 and FM 106.3 are owned by the same company.

"I'm working on setting up my own business, but I'll probably have to get a 'normal' job while I try and get that business off the ground, and that is an extremely scary prospect. I'm just glad my fiancee, my family and friends are so supportive. Without them I don't think I would have coped so far," he said.

Mr O'Byrne said Masters' leaving had been the result of "a legitimate redundancy".

"There was a restructure within the business and it was conducted within the business as a whole and as a result Scott Masters was no longer required, his skills were no longer required for our business," Mr O'Byrne said.

"And Canberra FM have met all their obligations in relation to a legitimate redundancy. And apart from that, I really don't have any other comment."

Masters has been reluctant to speak out but chose to release a statement, first to The Canberra Times, as he continues to challenge the station's decision.

"Given 104.7's inability to explain what actually happened other than saying it was 'a business decision' I thought it was time I spoke," he said, in a statement.

"There has been a lot of rumour and conjecture as to why I no longer work on the breakfast show, so let's get a few things straight.

"I am not sick.

"I haven't moved to Newcastle to be with my father due to his health concerns with muscular dystrophy.

"I didn't have a falling out with anyone at 104.7.

"And I wasn't paid more than Nige, so that's not the reason I was let go. We were on the exact same salary."

Masters said before he was dumped he had been on holidays, travelling to Fiji, where he became engaged to his partner.

It was upon his return to Canberra, less than four days before he was due back on air, that he was told by Mr O'Byrne he no longer had a job after eight years presenting the show full-time with Nigel Johnson.

"I got a call from the GM on Thursday Oct 9th and he was adamant that we catch up that day, so we met that night at 7pm, and by 7.20pm, I left the meeting with a handful of paperwork and the realisation that my radio career in Canberra was over," Masters said, in the statement.

"I was told the same as the public, that it was a 'business decision' and that the show would now have two hosts instead of three, that's it.

"After being part of the team for so long, with the expectation that I would continue with the successful show over a longer term, it was a complete shock. I asked if I could say goodbye to the listeners to which I was told, "No". This caused me to become visibly upset and was really the moment when it all sank in.

"104.7 is part of a bigger joint venture with Southern Cross Austereo and the Australian Radio Network. They have the resources to handle these situations properly and I hope other staff are treated more appropriately than I have been."

Masters said even after he was told he was no longer required, 104.7 continued to run promos saying "Scotty, Nige and Knuckles on Monday" until 9am on Friday, October 10 when the station put out a statement that he would not be returning. His belongings at 104.7 were boxed up and sent to his home by courier.

"I've been in radio 24 years, 13-plus years on and off in this stint at 104.7. Not being given a chance to attempt the new changes given my service to Canberra FM over the years is what hurts the most," Masters said.

"I don't think I've fully come to terms with their decision yet and it will take some time, you don't do a job every day for 24 years and then have that taken away from you with no warning and acclimatise to it instantly."

The new show featuring Johnson and former newsreader Kate "Knuckles" Rice went to air last week.

"I listened to Nige and Knuckles' first show and that was the hardest thing I've had to endure in my career," he said.

"Their statement about what happened, no doubt heavily vetted by management, sounded like a eulogy, and I sat and listened to that, hearing about all the good things I've achieved (with their help of course) on the show, and I was scratching my head wondering why I'd been let go, much like a lot of the listeners it seems.

"Another question I've seen asked by so many people is 'Are Nige and I still mates'? The answer is yes, we've been friends for almost 20 years and he's been put in a horrible position by management and I can only imagine how hard it is for him. I wish Nige and Knuckles well in their show and I hope they can achieve whatever it is they want in their careers."

Masters said he wanted to thank everyone who had offered him support since his dumping was announced. He planned to continue his work with the Cancer Support Group, of which Scotty and Nige were big supporters through its fundraising convoy, and to stay in the Canberra and Queanbeyan region. He wants to set up a media company offering anything from social media management to commercial voice overs to graphic design.

"I've made my home here and my family is here," he said.

"Thank you Canberra and Queanbeyan. I am going to find further opportunities to work in the region and help the community in a positive way."

Mr O'Byrne, meanwhile, said he was happy with the new breakfast line-up.

"It's refreshing, it sounds good and Nige and Kate are going really, really well and bedding in. So we're looking forward to the future," he said.
