Killeen is the first of four celebrity guests at this year's flower festival, which the ACT government hopes will be bigger than ever – while Glebe Park has emerged as the front runner for the festival's possible new future home.

The TV personality and author will host a series of storytelling presentations at Floriade in its first week – an event she jokingly described as being "all about pretending we know each other and building from there".

Floriade opens its gates on Saturday with floral creations on the theme of "Reflection", which commemorates the 100th anniversary of the Anzac landings at Gallipoli and was developed with the Australian War Memorial.

While the event pays tribute to history, the government is looking to the future.

It's considering splitting Floriade events up or moving them out of Commonwealth Park as the government's tenure with the National Capital Authority, which has control of the park, comes to an end.

ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr stressed there would be no changes to the event this year or in 2016 but the government was looking at Glebe Park as a potential new home down the track.

"Certainly the National Capital Authority have indicated a desire to change the footprint of the event within Commonwealth Park," he said.

"So there won't be dramatic change this year or next but beyond that I would anticipate the event moving more into the CBD so we are certainly actively scoping the opportunity for Glebe Park to be the major home for Floriade but that's a few years into the future. For the next couple of years – a strong presence here in Commonwealth Park."

Mr Barr said Glebe Park would not be too small for Floriade, which this year aims to attract 500,000 visitors over the course of a month.

"We've been looking at the footprint and it will work quite effectively," he said.

"The balance we have to strike here, of course, is between the temporary and permanent infrastructure which is necessary to stage an event of this scale. So if you look around you'll see most of the infrastructure here at Commonwealth Park has to be bumped in and bumped out for this event. Glebe Park has some more permanent infrastructure."

Mr Barr said that if Glebe Park were to become the home of Floriade, the government could start investing in that infrastructure.

"But I do want to stress that this is not an immediate change, it is something we will consider in about two years' time," he said.

In the meantime there are bold expectations for this year's event.

"Our aspirations for Floriade are to attract nearly half a million visits over the month," Mr Barr said

"We hope the economic contribution to the territory economy will approach $50 million. We're hoping for more than 100,000 interstate and international visitors to come to Canberra."
