The Commonwealth-led survey found about 1080 contaminated houses, which the federal government then set about cleaning between 1989 and 1992.

Since then, six houses missed in the clean-up have come to light, bringing the total number of houses containing the asbestos insulation to about 1086.
The buyback and demolition involves 1022 houses. So what of the remaining 64?
The Asbestos Taskforce says none of those 64 are still standing, with all of them demolished or destroyed before 2014, some many years ago. About 10 were destroyed in the 2003 bushfires.
Where properties had been demolished completely, they were taken off the list. While the taskforce admits the possibility of contaminated land on those properties, it has no plans to revisit them, insisting the risk disappeared with the houses.
Taskforce head Andrew Kefford said if there was remaining amosite asbestos under the slab of a new house the risk it posed was nil.
"Where an affected house has been completely demolished and a new property built on the site, the risk to health from any remnant asbestos fibres is negligible, especially where [even if they were to be present] they are buried under the slab of the new house," the taskforce said.
"The government is of the view that where there has been a knock-down and a rebuild and no asbestos is present in the modern house or any asbestos that would be present is buried beneath a concrete slab of a new property, common sense should prevail."
Houses are on the buyback and demolition list even where they have been extensively remodelled, if any part of the original house remains standing.
The buyback list of 1022 covers all houses still standing on February 18, 2014, when the government wrote to owners warning them about the contamination, including 11 houses where there was a binding contract to demolish signed between February 18 and October 28, when the buyback was announced.
The number has changed slightly in recent months as the list has been checked and refined, most recently being revised from 1021 to 1022 as an inner south property was included.
The taskforce said the inner south property hadn't been included until recently because of some uncertainty about when a demolition contract had been signed.
