Sydney's The World's News gasped that "Neptune's Daughter, a photo-play in which our own Annette Kellerman takes the stellar role, is doing business in Sydney at the Palace Theatre".

"A mermaid, a daughter of Neptune, undertakes to avenge the death of her little sister who was killed by fishermen. Annette (which is also the name she bears in the play), is changed from a mermaid into a mortal by means of a charm which the sea-witch has given her. Her intention is to kill the king whose laws were responsible for the baby mermaid's death.

"King William falls deeply in love with Annette, who returns the feeling, though she strives valiantly against it. After thrilling adventures on land and sea, Annette rescues the king when he is thrown into prison, circumvents his would-be flayers, and in the course of these adventures is hurled into the water, bound hand and foot, from a 60 foot cliff."

"The pictures, which it took three months to make, were made in the Bermuda Islands, where Miss Kellerman and a company of over 200 actors were transported. The 500 supernumeraries, who figure in the fishing, diving, and mob scenes were engaged In the islands.

"This marvellous photo-play is said to have broken all records in the pictorial world, having a run of 300 nights at the Globe Theatre, New York City, to its credit."
