Voluntary administrator Ferrier Hodgson announced the closure of 20 underperforming stores across Australia, including the Woden shop, to enhance the profitability of the chain before it is sold.

The Man to Man outlet is among numerous shops to leave the ailing town centre in the past year.

High rent and a retail downturn pushed a number of businesses out of Westfield in early 2014, then the town centre's public service population took a massive blow with plans to move more than 800 workers to the city.

Shops were still struggling when Myer abandoned plans to open in the centre later in the year.

The ACT government has a number of projects on the go in an effort to upgrade the tired town centre, including the construction of a new bus interchange and the expansion of Woden Plaza.

Ferrier Hodgson said one full-time staff member would be affected by the Woden closure and would be given redeployment opportunities in a similar role and location.

Man to Man shops are also located at Westfield Belconnen and the Tuggeranong Hyperdome Shopping Centre.

Voluntary administrator Brendan Richards said the closure of the 20 stores was regrettable but necessary for the survival of the remaining stores.

He thanked the staff of the closing Man to Man stores for their service and support during the voluntary administration period.

"Our task as voluntary administrators is to make the business as profitable and attractive as possible, so that new owners can see the value of investing in the future growth and stability of Man to Man," he said.

"With this restructure we are confident that our ongoing discussions with interested parties will result in a positive and speedy outcome for the business and its dedicated staff."

A Ferrier Hodgson spokesman said the final closure of stores had not been determined.

He would not comment on local factors that might have affected the Woden closure, such as rent or public service movements.

"The final date for closures of individual stores will vary and with the sales campaign officially kick-starting next week it is hard to determine dates at this stage," he said.

"The administrators are unable to comment on individual store performances at this stage. A range of factors is likely to have influenced the performance of any one individual store."

Woden Man To Man management would not comment on the closure.
