First Word: All mail bets are off at Christmas

It's mid-December, which means we're well into the headlong rush that leads us full tilt towards Christmas and New Year. It's also peak season for becoming intimately acquainted with the agony of the international postal system. For 11 months of the year, like most people, I go about my life unperturbed by the vagaries of the post. I order things online and I'm pleasantly surprised when they arrive the next day.
