A man has been charged over the alleged murder of a woman after her body was found in Melbourne's Chinatown.
The 32-year-old Cowes man was charged with one count of murder after being questioned by police late on Wednesday.
He is expected to appear in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Thursday afternoon.
The woman, reported to be aged 33, was found about 6.30am at the intersection of Little Bourke Street and Celestial Avenue, a narrow, dead-end laneway.
The alleged victim is yet to be identified. An autopsy will be undertaken to determine the cause of her "suspicious" death, police said.
Acting Superintendent Craig Peel told reporters earlier in the day he believed the woman was already dead when a member of the public reported her body in the street.
Police cordoned off the area for most of the day and forensic teams set up small marquees to preserve the scene from light rain as they gathered evidence.
