It was mere months ago that the rugby league convert arrived at the Gungahlin Eagles with a plan to ease his way into Super Rugby.

Despite having played just two first grade matches in the nation's capital, the rising star has already caught the attention of the Brumbies recruiters. Due to start training with the franchise on Monday evening, Ioane admitted he didn't expect to take the first step towards a Brumbies jersey so soon.

"It was faster than I expected and what I had hoped for," Ioane said.

"But that's the whole purpose of why I have moved here in the first place. It's a big step towards where I want to be in the future.

"I'm just glad that it has happened and I want to take this opportunity with both hands."

It's been a whirlwind ride for the 22-year-old New Zealander who left his family in 2017 to tackle his sporting dream across the Tasman.

After he touched down in the sunshine state, it wasn't long before he found himself lacing up his boots and lining up for the Wynnum-Manly Seagulls in rugby league's Queensland Cup.

But with the ultimate goal of making the All Blacks, Ioane's manager picked up the phone and set up a deal with Gungahlin.

"In the back of my head I knew I wanted to eventually move to union for the future because my main goal is to play for the All Blacks," Ioane said.

"So I didn't want to waste any time and stay in league. I'm trying to ease my way up the scene and hopefully play Super Rugby."

Eagles head coach Marco Caputo had nothing but praise for the No.8, who has already scored two "outstanding" tries donning the black and red.

"We recruited him from the Queensland Cup and he's been a revelation for us," Caputo said.

"He's still only fairly young, 22 years old, and he's shooting the lights out."

As the Brumbies battle through South Africa and Argentina with David Pocock, Lachlan McCaffrey and Josh Mann-Rea in the injury ward, the undefeated Eagles will take the field against the Queanbeyan Whites without the likes of Jahrome Brown, Tom Ross and Mack Hansen.

Coach Caputo said the club can no longer rely on their having their star players available for the John I Dent Cup, and that they've worked on having better depth across the field in their absence.

"It's great when you get them but you can't build your season around having Brumbies," Caputo said.

"They are a great luxury to have but the reality is that you get them maybe less than a handful of times a year. We have players in the depth there to cover those spots so we are pretty comfortable with what we have got."
