As the new board looks to prepare their next long term strategy, Sankey has vowed to open their doors and invite members to contribute their own ideas.
Sankey, who is also an inaugural member of the FFA Women's Football Council, believes having a unified approach with the community will reinvigorate the sport in the ACT.
"We want what's best for football in the region and if we have a unified approach then I think we can achieve whatever we set out to do," Sankey said.
Deputy chair Angelo Konstantinou also said engaging with the Capital Football members and the community will help provide a fresh perspective as the board head into the new strategic planning period.
"A fresh start is what we are hoping for," Konstantinou said.
"We need to reconnect with all the footballers and all the clubs and just have a better understanding of each other and how everyone works."
Sankey over as chair and director of the board from Mark O'Neill who stood down from the position after six years.
After being on the Capital Football board since 2013, Sankey becomes the second female chair after Rachael Harriman.
While Sankey is seen to be a 'trailblazer' in Canberra's football community, she believes the appointment is a reflection of a gender diverse community rather than her individual accolades.
"For me it's about equality and experience. It's very nice to be a trailblazer for women, but I don't see myself as a woman. I see myself as Fran who loves football," Sankey said.
"If that inspires other women to give it a go then that's absolutely terrific.
"As a federation we punch above our weight, we're the only federation to have had a female chair as far as I understand. That's trailblazing. The region itself, the people who support me. I didn't get here on my own and that's how we are going to achieve things - we're going to work together to deliver.
"We have great gender balance with the members now and I think that is terrific. Hopefully that will continue into the future as well."
Meanwhile, the Woden Weston Wanderers snuck home with a 1-0 win over the Riverina Rhinos in Griffith on Saturday evening.
A long-range strike from Luke Dark slipped through the fingers of the Rhinos goalkeeper to give the visitors the advantage in the 78th minute - one they would not relinquish.
It was a crucial win for Woden Weston's finals bid, while Monaro Panthers unveiled the revamped Riverside Stadium in their clash with perennial heavyweights Canberra FC on Saturday night.
