ActewAGL and French renewable energy company Neoen are partners in the hydrogen fuel station, to be installed by December at ActewAGL's compressed natural gas station in Mildura St, Fyshwick.
The 20-car Nexo order, the largest hydrogen fleet contract in Australia to date, is understood to be worth around $1 million and helps fulfil the ACT's zero target of having 50 per cent of its passenger car fleet as electric vehicles by 2019-20.
The Nexo is the Korean car maker's second generation hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, combining a 95kW fuel cell stack with a 40kW battery pack.
Hydrogen acts as the feedstock for the vehicle's on-board fuel cell stack, which converts the fuel into electricity, with water as the only emission.
Hydrogen is regarded as an "end game" fuel because of its abundance, yet numerous complexities remain around bringing it to market.
Introduced into international markets just over a year ago, the Nexo has a driving range of over 800 kilometres on one tank of hydrogen.
Together with the Toyota Mirai, Hyundai's medium-sized five door Nexo is one of only two production-built hydrogen cars currently available on the Australian market.
