The US higher education model beckons Australia

Education Minister Christopher Pyne, written off as a policy lightweight after his maladroit attempt to abandon the Gonski needs-based schools funding model last December, made a triumphant return to relevance this week. The deregulation of university tuition fees from January 2016, details of which were contained in Tuesday's federal budget, is all Mr Pyne's work – and the fact that it was largely unheralded makes it all the more surprising.
