Canberrans hit again by commission

Razor-wielding federal treasurers and expenditure review committees are a semi-regular fact of Canberra life, to which the city’s army of bureaucrats and policy-makers (and their dependents) have usually adapted with forbearance and stoicism. Many hunker down knowing that the most parsimonious of governments can evolve in its thinking about public-sector spending and, that when this happens, the funding and the function of the bureaucracy will usually be restored. But after the release on Thursday of the National Commission of Audit’s report, many Canberra public servants may be forgiven for wondering if a permanent era of austerity could be about to settle on the national capital.
