Punk can sometimes sound more like pop music than its proponents might like to admit. Heavy on the melody, these guys have an addictive and nostalgic skater punk/grunge sound. The music is gritty, but even-tempered, and sweetened by female vocals, curtsy of Izzy Almeida. Via fuzzed out power chords and the duel vocals of Almeida and Derek Watson, this is a record that borrows heavily from earlier generations yet still does everything right – tightly structured song craft, brilliantly simple lyrics and a concentration of the elemental forces of guitar, bass, drums and vocals. ‘‘I can be the sun and ocean,’’ sings Watson on killer opener Narcissist. And why shouldn’t he.
