M16 prizes

That M16 always steps up to the mark, and in the quietest time of the year, too! The art collective has just announced three new prizes to be awarded in 2014 to "emerging professionals with serious intent". Two of these will be exhibition prizes for emerging artists and/or curators. Known henceforth as the EEP, the prize is to support artists and curators taking that "first leap of faith towards a successful career in the arts". God knows, anyone in that category needs a boost sometimes. The winners will be mentored in putting together an exhibition in one of M16's gallery spaces. Applications are open now, and close on Thursday May 1, see But are you an art lover who can't necessarily, like, paint and stuff? M16 will also offer this year, for the first time, an Aspiring Arts Writers Residency, to give a local emerging arts writer the opportunity to "develop their writing practice, investigate art practice at M16 Artspace and the Canberra region, publish their work and contribute to the critical discussion of Australian contemporary art". The program is designed to "contribute to the growth of critical writing around contemporary art in Canberra", and includes a studio, professional development and mentorship and networking opportunities. Applications are open now, and are due by May 30. More information at
