The Raiders star was spotted in the Gymea Bay hotel on Saturday night, having skipped away from watching his teammates at Canberra Stadium at half time.
But his people insisted it wasn’t the beer which took him there, but the food.
''He goes to pubs all the time to have meals,'' his cousin Anthony Mundine told Fairfax Media.
''He likes pub-type meals like the schnitzels.”
But Ferguson didn’t need to go as far as the Sutherland Shire to get a good schnitzel. Canberra has an abundance of pubs, clubs and restaurants serving the European delight of crumbed, tenderised meat.
We at The Canberra Times have come up with a list of our favourite schnitzel joints to help stop Ferguson riding the gravy train out of the capital:
Eastlake Football Club – it’s a different footy code, which may be why Ferguson has missed it, but the club does a $9.95 chicken schnitzel lunch special midweek which is hard to go past.
Ainslie Football Club – the north side Aussie Rules club does a $10 chicken schnitty all day on Thursday.
Mooseheads – Ferguson has been known to frequent the famed Canberra nightspot, but perhaps he doesn’t realise they do a marinated chicken schnitzel for $10 at Thursday lunch. It comes with a bonus schooner.
Knuckles German Restaurant at the Harmonie German Club does $11 chicken schnitzels for lunch, Wednesday to Friday.
The Tradies at Dickson does a 2 for 1 deal on schnitzel on Tuesdays, or a $12 lunch special any day.
The Durham – This Kingston pub has a $10 Schnitzel on Thursday, but you can upgrade to a chicken parmigiana for $12.50 – it’s rated best in the ACT by parma.com.au.
And if NSW is a must, the Central Café in Queanbeyan does a schnitty "you cant jump over" according to one connoisseur.
So, Fergo, schnitz if you must. But you mustn't desert the Raiders again just for a decent pub meal.
