The description of the red Commodore involved in the petrol drive-off on Wednesday morning was picked up by police patrolling near Braidwood, who sighted the car heading west on the Kings Highway about 8.30am.
Police signalled for the driver to stop but he failed to comply and a pursuit began.
As the car reached the outskirts of Bungendore, the pursuit was terminated for safety reasons. ACT police were then alerted to the vehicle's likely approach.
The Commodore, which did not have a front bumper, continued on to Canberra where it was later found abandoned.
The driver is still being sought by police in both NSW and the ACT.
