Canberra has been experiencing a late season warm spell in recent days, with maximum temperatures almost five degrees above the May average.
The mercury has nudged into the low 20s early this week, with highs of 21 and 20 recorded on Tuesday and Wednesday respectively, compared to the monthly average top of 16 degrees.
Meteorologist at the Bureau of Meteorology, Helen Kirkup, said the unusually warm weather had been due to a large high pressure system.
"There's been a really stable high pressure ridge across the east of Australia for the last week or so," Ms Kirkup said.
"As well as that, a previous front system didn't come far enough north to impact on it."
However, the warm weather isn't set to last and the temperature is to plummet in coming days.
Friday's low is expected to be 1 degree. Showers and a low of 6 degrees are forecast for Sunday.
Showers are expected to stick around for much of early next week. A low of 1 and a top of 10 are predicted for Wednesday.
Ms Kirkup said frosty conditions were expected early next week, and there was the possibility of snowfalls in the mountains.
"The warm weather should stick around until the weekend until the next system pushes into the region," she said.
"There'll be a bit of wind and clouds, but by the middle of next week, we'll be looking at much more winter-like conditions."
