The council asked the ACT government to investigate the issue in ? its budget submission for the 2012-13 financial year.
Woden Valley Community Council chair Jenny Stewart said the pool and ice rink have long needed to be upgraded and ? would not be able to cope with an increase in use ?when Molonglo comes online.
?
"We're just unsure what is happening at the moment," she said.
"This has been a long running concern of the Woden Valley Community Council."
The council has also suggested the possibility of building a second pool in the Woden area.
ACT Ice Skating Association president Angelique Clyde-Smith said the centre had served the figure skating community well for 31 years but, apart from cosmetic changes, ? major renovations had never been completed.
Ms Clyde-Smith said the association would welcome an upgrade to the facilities including a competition-size ice surface, new toilets, improved judges' area, and an increase in the number of suitable change rooms to? host large interstate and national events.
"This would result in greater exposure of ice sports in general, leading to increased participation, better support and sponsorship opportunities and allow our members to train with confidence and better technique on the larger area in preparation for competition," she said.
The director general of the Economic Development Directorate,? David Dawes, said the government had no plans to take over the facility. He said a feasibility study was being completed on a possible aquatic facility in Molonglo but no decision had been made on the final form or timing of such a facility.
Phillip Swimming and Ice Skating Centre manager John Raut said there was a long-term plan in place to either refurbish or replace the ice rink, and turn the pool into an all-season facility.
?
"Most certainly we're open to any developers who would like to re-develop the facility," Mr Raut said.
