Police were called after it was immediately apparent the injury had been inflicted by a firearm.
However, when questioned by police the victim refused to reveal where the shooting incident had occurred, other than it was somewhere in Tuggeranong.
The incident occurred between 9 and 10pm on Monday. Anyone in Tuggeranong who may have heard a sound much like a gunshot on that evening is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
The man had driven a silver Mitsubishi Lancer to the hospital so any dash-cam footage which shows this vehicle would also help the investigation.
Police said the lack of detail about the incident was largely attributed to the man being "unhelpful" when interviewed. The incident is not believed to have been bikie-related.
