Labor MP Susan Templeman, who is hanging on to her Blue Mountains seat of Macquarie by less than 300 votes, said inaccurate material about Labor's abortion policy during the election campaign "had an impact".

Ms Templeman said she was "very shocked" by material that was letterboxed and handed out at a pre-poll booth that argued Labor had an "extreme late-term abortion agenda".

Shortly before the election, Labor released a wide-ranging sexual health policy, which included plans to leverage federal and state governments funding agreements to get states to provide abortion services in their public hospital systems.

While the policy was well supported within Labor, MPs and candidates in ethnically and religiously diverse seats -nb particularly in Sydney's west - have reported problems with the way it was received. While some say Labor should have given itself more time to explain the sexual health package to community stakeholders, others say Labor was the victim of "lies" about its policy.

During the campaign, Labor wrote to the Australian Electoral Commission, to complain that voters were being misled by material distributed by anti-abortion group Cherish Life "in a number of electoral divisions".

Labor MP Ed Husic comfortably retained his Blacktown seat of Chifley at the election, but suffered a 6.74 per cent swing against him.

"There was a bit of a wildfire going on over the issue of abortion, which caught me by surprise," he told Sky News last week.

Mr Husic said Labor's policy was "manipulated" during the campaign, with false suggestions the party was advocating third-term abortions. "It was just wrong."

Labor sources also say the abortion policy was a concern to some voters in seats such as Greenway, which Michelle Rowland retained for Labor with a 3.3 per cent swing against her.

Given its recent election loss, Labor's policies are now up for review. New Labor leader Anthony Albanese has explicitly said: "all policies, when you lose an election, the policies lapse".

When specifically asked about the women's sexual health policy, a spokesperson for the Labor leader said: "Mr Albanese has made he won't be making snap decisions about policy issues without consulting with his caucus colleagues. He has also made clear that while Labor's policies are under review, its values are not."

Labor women say they will not countenance any changes to the party's abortion policy, which took more than two years to develop. Emily's List, an organisation that supports progressive Labor women into politics, said the policy was "done and dusted".

"We'll be on our toes about any attempts to water it down," national co-convenor Tanja Kovac said.

Tanya Plibersek, who released the policy as Labor's spokesperson for women, stood by Labor's commitment.

"I'm proud that Labor has always led on women's issues - and we'll continue to do so. All Australian women should have access to health services where and when they need them."

The chair of Labor's women's caucus committee, Sharon Claydon, who also helped formulate the policy noted that it has been "developed over a number of years in close consultation with medical professionals and the community, which is why it is so widely supported".

Cherish Life Queensland says it targeted 25 marginal seats around the country during the election (including Macquarie but not Chifley or Greenway). The group ran TV, radio, print and digital ads and did more than 700,000 letterbox drops, with flyers saying "more babies would die under a Bill Shorten Labor government".

"I'm very happy with the success we've had," Cherish Life executive director Teeshan Johnson said, adding her campaign was "100 per cent accurate. Labor's angry because they lost."

Ms Templeman, who is still waiting to learn whether she will be re-elected in Macquarie, said she has a strong commitment to women having access to abortion. She stressed the debate going forward needs to focus on truth in political campaigning rather than the substance of Labor's policy.

"The real lesson out of this is when a group is telling lies, we have to be more effective at countering those." She also said it was important to engage people with concerns in a "genuine dialogue" about Labor's policy.

Labor released its women's sexual health policy in March, just weeks before the start of the federal election campaign. Along with linking hospital funding to abortion services, Labor also pledged to review Medicare rebates around medical terminations (using the drug RU486) and to help more GPs provide medical abortions. Labor also said it would push for abortions to be decriminalised in NSW and look at ways to make contraception cheaper and more accessible.
