The NDIS has been life changing for many people with disability, their families and carers. Around 6800 Canberrans now have an individual NDIS plan in place, giving them choice and control over the supports and services they receive.
We know there are many people with disability who are not NDIS participants and others may be awaiting a decision on their eligibility. Even for those who are participants, the Scheme is not intended to meet every need.
That is why it is so important that we continue to fund mainstream and universal services in Canberra.
New investment of $40.57 million over four years in the 2019-20 Budget will ensure we maintain services that are no longer considered as in-kind contributions once full scheme arrangements come into effect on July 1, 2019.
This investment ensures services remain free and accessible for Canberrans with disability.

Important services such as the Children and Young People's Equipment Loan Scheme, which provides specialist equipment and assistive technology to children with disability, carers and health professionals.
We know the transition to NDIS can be complex and some people experience issues when navigating the Scheme.
Through the 2019-20 Budget, we will continue to fund the Integrated Service Response program to work with the NDIA and service providers to resolve crises and help those with high support needs and complex situations.
To be a fully inclusive city, people with all abilities and experiences must have the opportunity to become involved in their communities.
The Office for Disability runs several grant programs throughout the year, aimed at bringing together people with disability, community organisations, businesses and government to recognise and value the contributions of people with disability.
The 2019 Disability Inclusion Grants (DIGs) enable community groups, not-for-profit organisations and small businesses to apply for funding of up to $20,000 to increase inclusion of people with disability.
Past initiatives include disability awareness training, access modifications, the purchase of assistive technologies including hearing loops and other accessible equipment.
The overwhelming response to the 2018 grants demonstrated the willingness of business and community to be more inclusive of people with disability and I encourage anyone with an idea or initiative to become involved.
