Headlined "New headquarters, computers for Canberra's newspapers", the story detailed the plan to shift The Canberra Times and The Chronicle operations late the next year.
"Later this year the company will take delivery of one of the most sophisticated editorial and production computer systems in the world," the report said.
"The company's new headquarters will be a two-storey colonial-style building, spreading over the two-hectare block ... staff facilities at Fyshwick will include a swimming pool, tennis court and gymnasium."
Alas, only the gymnasium remains today, while those at-the-time sophisticated computers enjoyed a long and productive life before being superseded in the online era.
The editor of the day, Ian Mathews, said the new digs and the systems would help ensure readers were kept up to date with what was happening in their city as the 21st century approached.
