Mr Morrison described the trip, scheduled for September, as "something very significant for Australia," adding he also appreciated the "warmth" shown to him and his wife, Jenny.

"Australia's relationship with the United States could not be stronger. And it could not be stronger at a more important time for Australia, where we are in our region, where things are at in the world today," Mr Morrison told reporters in Brisbane on Saturday.

Asked what he admired about his US counterpart, Mr Morrison replied he was a "strong leader, who says what he's going to do and then goes and does it".

"I can always rely on President Trump to follow through on what he says. In the time I've known him, he has demonstrated a real keen interest and knowledge of Australia."

Mr Morrison received an official invitation from the White House last week for a trip that will involve a formal state dinner and could coincide with the United Nations' General Assembly leaders' week.

The state dinner is being viewed in Canberra both as a sign of a healthy bilateral relationship and the friendly personal relations between the two leaders. Mr Morrison will be the first Australian prime minister to be hosted at a White House state dinner since John Howard dined with his good friend George W. Bush in 2006.

The cordial vibe is a far cry from the infamous 2017 phone call between former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull and Mr Trump, in which the US President blasted Mr Turnbull over a refugee agreement.

Mr Morrison most recently met with Mr Trump at the G20 summit in Japan last month. During a working dinner the US President hailed Mr Morrison's "tremendous victory" at the May federal election. On Friday, Mr Morrison visited a US aircraft carrier which was stationed off the coast of Queensland as part of the training exercise Operation Talisman Sabre. Addressing the crew of the USS Ronald Regan, he said "Australia and the United States see the world through the same eyes".

Mr Morrison is also ramping up pressure on the Queensland state government to officially endorse a bid for the 2032 Olympics to be held in south east Queensland. He met with Queensland premier Annastacia Palaszczuk on Friday, where he encouraged her to commit to a tilt at the summer games.

"Our government is backing the bid for the 2032 Olympic games here in Queensland," he told a convention of Queensland Liberal National Party members on Saturday.

"There's a window of opportunity here. And that's why its so important for the Queensland government to get on board. [The government] told me they're waiting on a few things ... You've got to be all in on this."

During the federal election, the Coalition pledged $10 million to help with the bid. On Saturday, Mr Morrison announced Queensland Coalition MP Ted O'Brien would liaise between the federal and state governments on the 2032 games.

Ms Palaszczuk has previously indicated there needs to be federal funding for the games themselves.
